This volume contains a short narrative of the activities of the 25th Massachusetts Regiment from its beginnings in Worcester, Mass., in the fall of 1861, through their participation in the Battle of Roanoke Island, in the winter of 1862, to just after the Battle of New Bern in North Carolina, in the spring of 1862. The volume also contains miscellaneous notes, including a list of money lent and to whom. The diary also contains an envelope from D.E. Keefe, a pharmacist in Springfield, Mass.

The 25th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was a Worcester County unit, organized at Camp Lincoln, Worcester, Mass., in the autumn of 1861. It served as part of the Burnside expedition to the coast of North Carolina, was assigned to the Star Brigade in 1864, and spent much of the war in the vicinity of New Bern, North Carolina. Frank W. Wellington (1842-1868) was a clerk from Worcester, Mass. On 16 September 1861, he enlisted and was mustered into Company H (Capt. Orson Moulton's Company) of the 25th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment. He was discharged on 20 October 1864 and died at Worcester on 9 November 1868. From the description of Diary, 1862.
